Get on the water this summer! Agua Day Camp offers a chance for middle school youth of color to experience Rhode Island’s waterways on the estuary system of the Narrow (Pettaquamscutt) River, where the freshwater of Carr Pond mixes with the tides from the Narragansett Bay.
While exploring local waterways through kayaking, art, and hands-on STEAM activities, Agua Day Camp Participants build comfort, confidence, and community and learn about local waterways’ connections to our communities’ past, present, and future.
Program Highlights
-
Agua Day Camp participants build comfort being outside, from the shore to the forest. We’ll hike through the wooded trails of the King Benson Preserve and enjoy the beach and waters of the Narrow River.
-
At Agua Day Camp, youth learn to paddle! We offer professional instruction in water safety and kayaking techniques. We’ll move our bodies together and practice mindfulness on the water.
-
Youth will get to know the ecology of the estuary through hands-on science. They’ll help monitor oyster populations in Upper Pond and practice measuring water quality. They’ll get to know the smell of seaweed and what it’s like to hold a crab or touch a barnacle.
-
Every day of camp provides a chance for youth to get creative and express themselves through artistic activities like drawing, natural dyeing, poetry, and dance!
